Oily scalp
treatment in KL
An oily scalp is not just an inconvenience â it is a signal that your scalp's sebum regulation is off balance. Washing more often does not fix it. At NÅMI, we address the root cause.
Book on WhatsAppWhy your scalp overproduces oil
Excess sebum is not simply a skin type â it is a response. Understanding what drives it is the first step to correcting it.
Sebaceous gland overactivity
The scalp has the highest concentration of sebaceous glands on the body. When these glands are overstimulated â by hormones, stress, or environmental heat â they produce more sebum than the scalp can regulate. This excess oil weighs the hair down, congests follicles, and creates an environment where bacteria and yeast thrive.
The over-washing cycle
Washing an oily scalp daily strips it of its natural oils, which triggers the sebaceous glands to produce even more sebum in compensation. Many guests find their scalp becomes oilier the more frequently they wash â a cycle that professional treatment can interrupt by recalibrating gland activity rather than simply removing the oil.
Hormonal and stress triggers
Androgens â particularly during hormonal fluctuations, puberty, or periods of sustained stress â directly stimulate sebum secretion. This is why an oily scalp often worsens during stressful periods or hormonal changes, and why topical products alone rarely produce lasting results.
Follicle congestion and scalp acne
Excess sebum does not remain on the scalp surface â it accumulates inside follicles, creating congestion that can lead to breakouts, bumps, and tenderness along the hairline and scalp. Left unaddressed, congested follicles can weaken hair at the root and contribute to increased shedding over time.

Signs your scalp needs the Natsu programme
Oily scalp presents in different ways. The Natsu programme is suited to guests experiencing one or more of the following.
- Roots feel greasy or flat within hours of washing â sometimes before the end of the same day
- Hair lacks volume or feels heavy and limp despite regular washing
- Scalp odour between washes â a sign of bacterial activity driven by excess sebum
- Visible oiliness at the roots while the mid-lengths and ends remain dry â a common oily scalp, dry hair combination
- Bumps, breakouts, or tender spots along the hairline or scalp â indicating follicle congestion or scalp acne
- Itching or discomfort even on a recently washed scalp
- Increased shedding or thinning alongside persistent excess oil

Derma Calm
Scalp treatment for oily scalp & congestion
Natsu is NÅMI's anti-inflammatory and sebum-regulating programme, suited to guests with oily, congested, or acne-prone scalps. Sessions run approximately ninety minutes, with the treatment approach adjusted based on your scalp condition at the time of each visit.
Every session begins with a detailed scalp analysis â we assess sebum levels, follicle congestion, inflammation, and bacterial activity before treatment begins. This ensures actives are selected for your specific condition, not a generic oily scalp profile.
How the Natsu treatment works
Each Natsu session follows a structured protocol calibrated to your scalp condition. The sequence is designed so that each step builds on the one before it.
-
01
Scalp analysis
Your therapist uses a scalp camera to assess sebum levels, follicle congestion, bacterial activity, and any areas of inflammation or breakout. This informs product selection for the entire session.
-
02
Deep scalp cleanse
A thorough cleanse removes excess sebum, product residue, and surface congestion â preparing the scalp for treatment actives and ensuring nothing interferes with absorption.
-
03
Steam therapy
Steam opens follicles and softens congestion, allowing the treatment actives applied in the next step to penetrate more effectively. It also promotes relaxation and supports scalp microcirculation.
-
04
Anti-inflammatory and sebum treatment
Targeted actives are applied to regulate sebaceous gland activity, reduce inflammation, and address bacterial or yeast overgrowth. The formulation is selected at each session based on your current scalp condition.
-
05
Follicle decongestion
A targeted treatment step clears congestion from within the follicle â addressing the root of scalp acne breakouts and the sluggish follicle environment that contributes to flat, oily hair.
-
06
Scalp massage and finish
A firm, targeted scalp massage improves circulation, supports the absorption of treatment actives, and closes the session. The Panasonic Nanoe⢠dryer is used for the blow-dry finish to minimise heat damage and static.

A scalp that turns greasy within hours of washing is usually overproducing sebum in response to an imbalance â often caused by over-stripping the scalp with harsh shampoos, stress, hormonal changes, or environmental humidity. Frequent washing tends to worsen the cycle, as it strips the scalp further and triggers even more oil production. Professional treatment addresses the sebum imbalance directly rather than temporarily removing the oil.
Yes, in some cases. Chronic excess sebum can clog follicles, create a breeding ground for Malassezia yeast, and contribute to inflammation â all of which can weaken follicles over time and accelerate shedding. If you are experiencing both an oily scalp and noticeable thinning, your therapist may recommend a progression to the Fuyu â Active Growth programme after the scalp environment is stabilised.
They are closely related. Oily scalp refers to excess sebum production and congested follicles. Scalp acne occurs when that congestion, combined with bacterial overgrowth, causes visible breakouts, bumps, or pustules along the hairline and scalp. The Natsu programme addresses both â it regulates sebum, reduces bacterial activity, and calms the inflammation that triggers breakouts.
Most guests notice a difference in oil control within two to three sessions. Lasting sebum regulation â where the scalp maintains balance between washes â typically requires a course of four to six sessions. Spacing sessions two to four weeks apart gives the scalp time to recalibrate rather than rebound.
Oily dandruff â greasy roots with flaking â is one of the most common combinations we see. Both the Natsu and Aki â Purifying Scalp Detox programmes can address this, depending on whether excess oil or flaking is the dominant concern. Your scalp analysis at the start of your appointment will confirm the right starting programme. In some cases we address both in a tailored combined session.
