Dandruff scalp
treatment in KL

Dandruff that keeps returning is not a hygiene problem — it is a scalp imbalance. Most anti-dandruff shampoos treat the flakes, not the condition underneath. At NŌMI, we go to the source.

Why dandruff keeps coming back

Anti-dandruff shampoo removes the flakes you can see. It does not correct the scalp environment producing them — which is why most guests have been managing the same problem for years before they arrive.

01

Malassezia overgrowth

Dandruff is most commonly caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia, a naturally occurring yeast on the scalp. When sebum production is excessive, Malassezia proliferates and triggers the accelerated skin cell turnover that produces visible flaking. Washing alone does not rebalance this cycle.

02

Sebum and oil imbalance

Excess sebum is the primary fuel for dandruff-related flaking. It creates the environment in which Malassezia thrives and leads to scalp congestion, odour, and persistent build-up that regular shampoo cannot fully remove.

03

A compromised scalp barrier

The scalp's natural barrier regulates moisture, oil production, and its response to environmental triggers. When this barrier is disrupted — by frequent washing, chemical services, or chronic inflammation — dandruff cycles become harder to break and easier to worsen.

04

Build-up and congestion

Scalp build-up from products, dead skin cells, and dried sebum creates a layer that suffocates follicles and worsens flaking. This type of congestion — which also occurs after colouring or chemical treatments — requires professional-grade exfoliation and detox, not a change of shampoo.

Signs your scalp needs the Aki programme

Dandruff presents differently for everyone. The Aki programme is suited to guests experiencing one or more of the following.

  • Visible white or yellowish flakes on the scalp, hair, or shoulders
  • Flaking that returns within days of washing — anti-dandruff shampoo offers only temporary relief
  • Scalp that feels itchy, tight, or uncomfortable alongside visible flaking
  • Patches of dry, flaky skin or visible scalp peeling — sometimes in chunks
  • Scalp build-up or congestion after colouring, bleaching, or other chemical services
  • Greasy roots with dry flakes — a sign of oily dandruff rather than dry scalp
  • Scalp conditions linked to eczema, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis

Aki —
Purifying Scalp Detox

Scalp treatment for dandruff & build-up

Aki is NŌMI's deepest cleansing programme — a purifying scalp detox designed for guests with stubborn dandruff, heavy build-up, or scalp conditions linked to eczema, psoriasis, or chemical residue. Sessions run between ninety minutes and three hours depending on scalp condition.

Every session begins with a detailed scalp analysis. We assess flaking pattern, oil levels, scalp barrier health, and congestion depth before selecting the right treatment approach for that session.

Three treatment pillars
01
Deep scalp exfoliation
A professional-grade exfoliation lifts dead skin cells, dried sebum, and product build-up that regular washing leaves behind — clearing the scalp surface before deeper treatment begins.
02
Purifying detox treatment
Targeted actives address Malassezia overgrowth, regulate sebum production, and reduce the inflammation and irritation that drive the dandruff cycle. Formulations are selected based on individual scalp condition at each session.
03
Scalp barrier repair
The session closes with barrier-restoring actives to calm the scalp, reduce sensitivity, and rebuild the moisture layer that prevents flaking from recurring. A compromised barrier is the primary reason dandruff returns after treatment.

How the Aki treatment works

Each Aki session follows a structured protocol. The sequence is designed so that each step prepares the scalp for what comes next — none are interchangeable.

  1. 01

    Scalp analysis

Your therapist uses a scalp camera to assess flaking pattern, oil levels, congestion depth, and scalp barrier condition. This shapes the product selection and approach for the rest of the session.

  2. 02

    Pre-treatment exfoliation

A professional scalp scrub lifts dead skin cells and dried sebum, clearing the scalp surface and opening the pathways for deeper treatment actives to penetrate.

  3. 03

    Steam therapy

Steam softens residual build-up and further prepares the scalp for the detox treatment. It also supports microcirculation and adds a deeply relaxing element to the session.

  4. 04

    Purifying detox application

Targeted actives selected for your specific scalp condition are applied and worked in. These address Malassezia imbalance, regulate sebum production, and reduce the inflammation driving the flaking cycle.

  5. 05

    Scalp barrier repair

Barrier-restoring actives are applied to calm the scalp, reduce sensitivity, and rebuild the protective layer that prevents flaking from returning. This step is what separates a professional dandruff treatment from an anti-dandruff shampoo.

  6. 06

    Scalp massage and finish

A targeted scalp massage improves circulation, supports absorption of the repair actives, and closes the session. Most guests find the final massage the most restorative part of the appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Anti-dandruff shampoos address the surface symptoms but rarely correct the underlying scalp imbalance. Persistent dandruff is usually caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast, excess sebum, or a compromised scalp barrier — conditions that require targeted professional treatment rather than a medicated wash.

Most guests notice a meaningful reduction in flaking after two to three sessions. For stubborn or long-standing dandruff, a course of four to six sessions spaced two to four weeks apart is recommended to address the underlying imbalance rather than the surface symptoms alone.

They are different conditions. Dry scalp produces small, white flakes and is caused by insufficient moisture. Dandruff typically produces larger, oilier flakes and is linked to sebum imbalance and Malassezia overgrowth. Your scalp analysis at NŌMI will confirm which condition you have — and in some cases both can be present simultaneously.

Itchiness is common alongside dandruff and is addressed as part of the Aki programme. If your primary complaint is inflammation, redness, or sensitivity rather than flaking, your therapist may recommend starting with the Natsu — Derma Calm programme instead. Your scalp analysis appointment will determine the right starting point.

Yes. The Aki programme is specifically suited to scalps carrying chemical residue from colouring, bleaching, or perming — in addition to dandruff-related congestion. The deep cleanse and exfoliation steps are designed to lift stubborn build-up that regular washing cannot remove.
